The Canadian Screen Award nominations were recently announced, which is the Canadian equivalent of the Emmys and the Oscars. As we continue the conversation about getting more women hired for roles behind the camera, this special Fem TV episode takes a look at how the TV nominees for the 2018 Canadian Screen Awards — or CSAs — compared to the 2017 Emmys when it comes to female representation.

Bridget Liszewski of The TV Junkies joins Melissa to discuss the directing and writing categories at the CSAs and see how they measure up to the most recent batch of Emmy nominees and winners.

In the first Fem TV minisode of 2018, Melissa sits down with Stana Katic, star and executive producer of thriller series Absentia, coming to Showcase in Canada on January 21, and Amazon in the US on February 2.

She talks about her role in Absentia and teases some of the upcoming plot threads. Stana starred as Kate Beckett on the hit ABC series Castle for eight seasons, and discusses the differences between filming a serialized show like Absentia versus Castle’s more episodic format.

We end 2017 with a Fem TV minisode featuring Catherine Reitman. Many know her from her roles on Black-ish and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In Canada, she’s creator, executive producer, star, and director of the CBC comedy Workin’ Moms. Season 2 begins in January 2018, and earlier this week, a special prequel episode aired that featured a couple of the characters in their younger days.

Fem TV will be back with new episodes in 2018. Wishing everyone the best of the holiday season!
